The troop drawdown continues.
As part of the deal reached last February with the Taliban, the United States has closed at least ten bases across Afghanistan. The base closures are part of the complete withdrawal of American troops from that nation.
Uncertainty seems to remain among U.S. and Afghan officials surrounding plans to bring down troop numbers from roughly 5,000 to 2,500 by January 15. It is equally unclear what remains of the bases that are being closed.
Even though there are drawdowns in personnel and equipment, the U.S. will retain the ability to carry out airstrikes against the Taliban in defense of Afghan forces. U.S. troops will also remain able to carry out some counterterrorism strikes against the Islamic State. It is believed further decisions on withdrawals will be made in consultation with both NATO allies and Afghan partners.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- That the drawdown of American troops in Afghanistan would not embolden new hostilities by the Taliban.
- For stability in the region with the reduction of the American footprint in Afghanistan.
- That the remaining American troops will be equipped with all the resources they need to pursue an ongoing mission.
- For the continued negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban to come to a workable peace agreement.
